What is persistent covid-19?

Persistent Covid-19, sometimes referred to as sequelae of Covid-19, is when symptoms of Covid-19 last 4 weeks or more after the initial infection.

Nearly 1 in 3 people who get covid-19 report having persistent covid-19.

Because covid-19 is new, scientists don’t yet know everything about persistent covid-19.

Common symptoms of covid-19

Most people with persistent COVID-19 report that symptoms limit their daily activities. About 1 in 4 people report significant impairments.

Covid-19 can take many forms, but some common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Tos
  • Difficulty breathing
  • palpitations
  • Heachache
  • Difficult to focus

How does obesity relate to persistent covid-19?

Living with obesity increases the risk of suffering from severe covid-19 and developing persistent covid-19. It is possible that obesity makes covid-19 worse because it could:

  • Weaken the reaction of the immune system
  • worsen lung function
  • Causes inflammation in the body, which is an overreaction of the immune system that can make Covid-19 symptoms last longer

Are covid-19 vaccines useful for preventing persistent covid-19?

Studies show that having at least 2 covid-19 vaccines reduces the risk of developing persistent covid-19.

Does your weight have any relation to the effectiveness of the covid-19 vaccines?

People who get vaccinated are less likely to get severe covid-19 than people who don’t get vaccinated, regardless of their weight.

However, research has shown that vaccinated people who are underweight or overweight are at a higher risk of becoming seriously ill with COVID-19 than vaccinated people of healthy weight.

If you are obese, it is important to see your doctor as soon as possible if you have been exposed to covid-19.
